            Sharpening Grit Progression for All Wicked Edge Abrasives

            When determining the best grit progression to use you must first identify the material of the abrasive you are using. For the most part, you’ll want to progress from hard materials to soft ones, especially with coarser grits.Then, progress within those materials from coarser grits to finer grits.

            When considering Wicked Edge abrasives, this is the material progression to use: Diamond > Ceramic > Balsa Strops > Lapping Films > Leather Strops > Kangaroo Leather Strops > Nano-Cloth Strops (steps can be omitted)

            The progression through the grits is generally coarse to fine, but isn’t always linear. At times, you may jump backward to a coarser grit when you change abrasives or substrates to something that is softer. In the list below you’ll see that the grit progression moves from the 1.4 micron ceramic stones to the 0.6 micron ceramic stones (Microfine Ceramic Stones Pack) and then to the 14 micron diamond paste on balsa (14/10 Micron Diamond and Balsa Strops pack). In a numeric progression, 14 would be courser than 0.6. However, because the materials are changing from a hard ceramic to a softer balsa with a 14 grit diamond paste, the 14 would come after the 0.6.

            It’s okay to skip steps and jump over one or two of these abrasive materials when progressing, but keep in mind the more steps you use, the better your finishes will be. Determining which abrasive to use and which ones to skip over depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you’re sharpening a knife that is used on a regular basis (think pocket knives or kitchen knives) you’ll want a sharp working edge but probably don’t need to spend time working with abrasives that are suited mostly to polishing. A good progression for this type of edge would be as follows.

            100 Grit Diamond Stone>200 Grit Diamond Stone>400 Grit Diamond Stone>600 Grit Diamond Stone>800 Grit Diamond Stone>1000 Grit Diamond Stone>5.0/3.5 Diamond and Leather Stops Pack

            On the other hand, if you want your knife to have a polished or mirror finish to the edge, you’ll want to follow a grit progression that’s more like this.
