Apply a dime sized drop of stropping compound and spread it to a thin layer over the entire surface of the strop. This amount should be good for 30 or 40 sharpening sessions before you would need to re-apply more of the compound to the strop.

I prefer kangaroo when using finer compounds. If you're using coarse compounds, balsa is great because you can really load up the strops and make them aggressive.
